FIFA and South Africa's World Cup organizers have gone on the defensive about security issues at five World Cup stadiums caused by a stewards' strike over low pay.
The spokesmen for FIFA and the organizing committee declined to address the problems at their daily news briefing Wednesday, referring all questions to police.
Police have taken responsibility for both stadiums in Johannesburg, and the venues in Cape Town, Durban and Port Elizabeth, since stewards began protests Sunday evening.
FIFA and local organizers declined to answer questions about the cost of deploying thousands of additional police officers on match days, or if security contractor Stallion would be fired.
